Arnaud de Comps appears in traditional lists as a short-serving Master in the 1160s.
Life and service to the Order
His position in the succession is disputed in modern accounts, which sometimes place Gilbert of Assailly directly after Auger de Balben. The differing lists illustrate how incomplete the evidence is for some early leaders of the Hospitallers.
In this period the Hospitallers maintained a hospital and defended their communities in the Holy Land. Their base shifted to Acre after the loss of Jerusalem, and to Cyprus after the fall of Acre in 1291.
