Life and service to the Order

Captured at the Battle of La Forbie that year, he remained a prisoner for several years; other brothers governed in his absence until his release in 1250.

In this period the Hospitallers maintained a hospital and defended their communities in the Holy Land. Their base shifted to Acre after the loss of Jerusalem, and to Cyprus after the fall of Acre in 1291.

1242 - 1258

Grandmaster Guillaume de Chateauneuf was taken hostage to Egypt at the Battle of Gaza in 1244 and ransomed through the Sixth Crusade 1248-1254.
