The 1950 illustrated volume by Rudolf Prokopowski labels this figure “Saint Andrew of Hungary”. The medieval Hungarian kings Andrew I (d. 1060) and Andrew II (d. 1235) should not be conflated. A picture showing later Hospitaller emblems cannot establish that Andrew I belonged to the Order: he died before its emergence.
The image may reflect a later artistic tradition concerning Andrew II, who took part in the Fifth Crusade, but the engraving alone does not settle the king’s identity or prove his membership of the Order. Neither king should be presented here as a canonized Catholic saint on the strength of this caption.
