Garin de Montaigu led the Hospitallers for about two decades in the early thirteenth century.

Life and service to the Order
His mastership included the Fifth Crusade, as the Order continued to combine care for the sick and pilgrims with the defence of the Holy Land.
In this period the Hospitallers maintained a hospital and defended their communities in the Holy Land. Their base shifted to Acre after the loss of Jerusalem, and to Cyprus after the fall of Acre in 1291.
