Brief Biography
Gastone de Murols led the Order after Gilbert of Assailly.
Life and service to the Order
Previously a treasurer of the Order, he took office amid disagreement over Gilbert’s succession. His brief mastership belongs to a period when the Hospitallers had to manage both their resources and a growing military role.
In this period the Hospitallers maintained a hospital and defended their communities in the Holy Land. Their base shifted to Acre after the loss of Jerusalem, and to Cyprus after the fall of Acre in 1291.
